The National Register of Historic Vessels has launched a competition to encourage people to visit and photograph historic boats in their local area. The competition has two separate categories for primary and secondary school children. The competition opens on 1 May 2010 and the closing date for entries is midnight on Saturday 31 July 2010. The judging panel will include actor and Vice-President of The Waterways Trust, David Suchet and presenter of BBC2’s coast Mark Horton.
The Waterways Museum in Gloucester houses several historic boats which would make perfect subjects for the photography competition, including the Queen Boadicea II. Built in 1936 Queen Boadicea II is a Dunkirk ‘Little Ship’ who joined the volunteer fleet for ‘operation dynamo’ to evacuate troops from the beaches in May 1940. She now runs boat cruises along the Gloucester & Sharpness canal between April and October.
