Learning programmes

The National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port brings the story of the waterways to life. Our learning programmes link with English, Maths, Science, Design & Technology, the Arts, Geography and of course History.

Narrowboat Decoration
Curriculum links: KS1 and KS2

A creative activityusing art to teach the crafts, customs and social history of the boat people. Participants decorate a full-size reproduction of a narrowboat cabin with itmes that they have made during the course of the activity.

Also appropriate for groups with special or additional needs.

Clothes around the Cut
Curriculum links: KS1 topics and KS2, SU3A and 3B

A lively learning experience using costumes, the museum's historic boats, period cottages and artefacts. Participants become characters from the past and explore what it would have been like to live in the 19th century.

Coracle Workshop
Curriculum links: KS2 and KS3 Design & Technology

Participants design, construct, test and evaluate a model coracle made from various combinations of material of their choosing to discover which has the best construction and floatation properties.

Roses and Castles
Curriculum links: KS2 and KS3

Arts and crafts programme where participants learn the basic techniques of traditional canal art which have evolved over hundreds of years. Completed work can be taken home.

Time Detectives
Curriculum links: KS2 History and Geography

Participants work in teams to discover more about historical artefacts from the inland waterways collection. Includes investigating, handling and discussing museum objects which are then used to form a time-line illustrating the development of products.

One free teacher/ assistant place is allocated for every 6 students.
