Learning programmes

The National Waterways Museum brings the story of the waterways to life. Our learning programmes link with English, Maths, Science, Design and Technology, Arts, Geography and of course History.

Homes From The Past - KS1 and KS2

A session which explores life in the 19th century through costumes, historic boats, period cottages and objects.

Narrowboat Art - KS1

A creative activity which through art teaches about the crafts, customs and social history of canal folk. A full size replica of a canal boat cabin is decorated during the session.

WWII Children - KS2

A fun activity session exploring how people lived and worked during the war - using period cottages, costumes, a mock air raid shelter and objects children will become evacuees and experience an air raid.

Roses and Castles Art - KS2

Through the traditional decoration of canal boats, children learn the distinct social history of life on the canals. Specialist techniques are taught and participants are encouraged to experiement with their own designs.

The fun and challenging activity encourages children to think scientifically and creatively, learning about the water cycle, aquatic habitats and adaptation.
