Historic Boat Collection: Bigmere

Bigmere is an unpowered steel dumb barge. Yarwoods of Northwich built her in 1948 (vessel no 818) as one of their ‘mere’ boats with a cargo capacity of 100 tons. She was owned by the Bridgewater Dept. of the Manchester Ship Canal Company and was used to transport grain along the Manchester Ship Canal to Kelloggs at Trafford.

She finished her working life in 1974 and today sits outside the Toll House at Ellesmere Port.
